Let me first start off by saying, I am probably one of the least hippie parents around. I am pretty straight laced, and follow things by the book. So, when I learned of hemp milk I was basically like “huh?!” But, it’s definitely the best option for our family. Let me explain…
I proudly breastfed Noah a little over a year, and then we switched directly to whole milk. Around this time is when we had our terrifying anaphylactic reaction to peanut butter. Noah never cared for cows milk, but the kid had to drink it and get some calcium somewhere. Well, when we received our blood work back from the allergist, it showed Noah was allergic. Given that allergy blood tests can be pretty inaccurate, the allergist recommended taking milk out of his diet and see the results. If we noticed a significant difference in his eczema, it would probably confirm our diagnosis. Sure enough, Noah’s dry, scaly back was now smooth as silk. What a difference, I truly couldn’t believe it. But, this definitely confirmed his milk allergy. Womp womp.
So, my kid was now allergic to cow’s milk, almonds, and soy – which ruled out the three major milk types that were advertised. I was left with lots of research to find the best alternative that Noah liked, but that also gave him the nutrients he needed. I quickly realized I had three main options: rice milk, coconut milk, or the lesser known hemp milk. It took all of about 2 seconds of research to realize this was something we needed to try.
NOTE: I am not a doctor or a nutritionist. All the information here has been from my own research, and our family’s experience. Make sure to consult your doctor before making a change in diet, and do your own research before deciding what is safe and best for your child’s allergies.
Like trying anything new with an allergic child, I was extremely nervous about trying something as different as hemp milk. The main ingredient is “hemp nut base” – and my son is allergic to all nuts. So, I was terrified. But, other allergy moms raved about it – so it was worth a try. Essentially the hemp milk is made from transforming tiny hemp seeds into creamy milk. Crazy. Not only that, but the hemp seed contains vitamins, minerals, all 10 essential amino acids and omega 3 & omega 6 “good” fats. So, when comparing the nutrients of the hemp milk to that of rice milk, it was a no-brainer for our family. The fat content, calories, and nutrients of hemp milk much more closely resemble that of cow’s milk, versus rice milk. Which is awesome.
We personally have only used Tempt Hemp Milk – and Noah loves it. We’ve tried the Original, Vanilla, and Chocolate…and we have a constant stockpile in our house. Their website awhile back used to say that it was manufactured in a facility that did handle peanuts, which was no bueno for us. BUT, their website no longer makes this claim. So, I reached out via email, and they stated that their hemp products are manufactured in a facility that does NOT handle any nut whatsoever. Score!
When I first tell people that Noah drinks hemp milk, inevitably their first comment is, “hemp? as in marijuana?” haha. Well, hemp is actually a totally different plant than its “cousin” plant of marijuana. It contains no drug value…so no, I am not giving my kid weed. But rather a super healthy, safe milk alternative! For anyone struggling with dairy allergies, or looking for a change, I’d stronglyyy encourage you to do some research and try hemp milk!
